Where to go for urgent care?

30 January, 2024

EMPHN is supporting the delivery of after-hours urgent care via Priority Primary Care Centres and the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department. These essential services can help you to avoid long waits in hospital emergency departments.

What is urgent care?

Most injuries and illnesses don’t require a trip to hospital. However, sometimes you do need to see a doctor or nurse quickly, and your usual general practitioner might not be available. In these cases, you might need what is known as ‘urgent care’.

These situations might include injuries such as burns, sprains, suspected broken bones, or an illness that develops quickly and makes you feel ill enough to need help – but not so sick that you need to call an ambulance.

In the centre, north and west of Melbourne, your urgent care options are Priority Primary Care Centres and the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department.

You can share resources to assist patients in understanding the different types of urgent care options. The resources include translated material, available in Arabic, Assyrian, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Punjabi, Turkish, Vietnamese, and English.
