Mandatory reporting to the Australian Immunisation Register

11 February, 2021

The Australian Immunisation Register Amendment (Reporting) Bill 2020 legislation has passed the Australian Parliament will require all vaccination providers to report vaccinations to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).

Any COVID-19 vaccines administered in Australia must be reported to the AIR. Influenza vaccinations must be reported to the AIR from 1 March 2021 and all other NIP vaccinations must be reported from 1 July 2021.

For the majority of general practices this will be a continuation of the routine practice of transmitting to AIR via practice management software. Direct access to AIR via PRODA should be delegated appropriately to members of the practice nursing or management team. Further information - Supporting and understanding delegations in HPOS to enable access to the Australian Immunisation Register.

Consumers who don’t have access to Medicare, such as people on temporary visas, should be encouraged to use an Individual Health Identifier (IHI) to record their vaccine administration into the AIR. Further information - Application to create or update an Individual Healthcare Identifier.
