Fracture Management Project

27 March, 2017

Are you an active general practitioner with an interest in orthopaedics, who:

  • would like to manage undisplaced fractures in your own practice;
  • would like the opportunity to undertake paid training in your own healthcare network,
  • be engaged with an outpatient service for 12 months; and
  • receive direct referrals from emergency departments (EDs) and outpatient clinics, for patients with undisplaced fractures requiring management?

EMPHN is undertaking a project for 12 months from July 2017, to establish a faculty of general practice orthopaedics, provide training over the 12 month period in the management of undisplaced fractures, including clinical assessment, plaster splinting and casting, polyester casting, and use of orthotics.

This project is anticipated to involve Eastern Health, Austin Health and Northern Health.

Many of you may have attended GP orthopaedic training days run through Eastern Health by Dr Geoff Broomhall over the last 7 years. We now seek expressions of interest from about 15 general practitioners across the networks, to join us in this exciting initiative to return fracture management to GPs and provide ongoing education and training in orthopaedics.

The benefits will be a reduction in outpatient demand, less travel for patients, increased satisfaction for GPs and substantial CPD points for the RACGP triennium.
