Donations aid distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to frontline primary care providers in need

08 May, 2020

EMPHN have gratefully received the following generous donations of PPE which were distributed to providers in our community with the highest need given the difficulties worldwide securing personal protective equipment.

Surgical Masks

10,000 Surgical Masks were generously donated to EMPHN by a project led by Dr Zhanming (Ming) Liang, President of the Society for Health Administration Programs in Education (SHAPE), La Trobe University, and her friend Shawn Lin.

Kathy Tepper, EMPHN Sector Capacity & Workforce lead receiving the donation of 10,000 surgical masks from SHAPE President Dr Zhanming Liang.

Dr Zhanming Liang said the project was a way to show appreciation for the Australian health system.

‘After the COVID-19 outbreak in Australia, we wanted to offer assistance and play a role in our local community. With the difficulties the health system is facing, we wanted to help in a practical way.

‘Finding out exactly what Australian health services need was a really important part of the project. That’s why after discussions with Primary Health Networks, funds were raised to provide Level 1 surgical masks that meet specific standards (EN14683-2019), which Primary Health Networks can distribute to GPs.’

The donation EMPHN received was part of a larger donation of 65,000 surgical masks to PHNs in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland.

EMPHN Interim CEO Geoff Lavender has expressed his thanks for the fantastic generosity and thoughtfulness of SHAPE's members, its executive committee and the 100 or more participants from Australian Chinese communities who contributed to the donation.

To date EMPHN have distributed these donated masks to aged care facilities, palliative care providers and mobile pathology services, among others. With consideration for the highest needs of the communities in which the EMPHN does its work.

Funded largely through donations from Australia’s Chinese community, nearly 100 individuals contributed to the cause, with donations also coming from academics in Australian universities and people living in China.
