Crossroads to Community Wellbeing

04 May, 2021

In 2018 a Victoria Police sergeant observed a concerning pattern of suicides in the Whittlesea area. There was a history of family violence in some cases but not all. What was linking the cases was that all the women were from South Asian background. In response, EMPHN initiated and led a working group comprised of Council representation, legal service, health services and police who put together an action plan with the local South Asian community containing detailed information to help prevent further suicides. It incorporated existing programs that contribute to reducing family violence and suicide. The media reported on the issue in June 2020 prior to the Coronial inquest into four of the deaths was released. SBS News produced this article titled, After several women suicided, this Melbourne community is addressing family violence, which is a follow up piece 12 months after their initial reporting. SBS has also produced a three-part investigative series on domestic and family violence titled, See What You Made Me Do, which airs 5 May.
