Closure of LifeConnect Bereavement Support Service

LifeConnect has provided suicide prevention and bereavement after suicide support services to people in Melbourne’s east and north east. The LifeConnect program is funded by the Australian Government under Eastern Melbourne PHN and is delivered by Neami National.

As of 30 June 2022, a reduction in available funding will result in the closure of the LifeConnect suicide bereavement programs including one-on-one counselling and outreach and support groups. Lifeconnect will continue to provide targeted education and resources to community groups impacted by suicide.

The LifeConnect program will continue to provide community-focused suicide prevention services , including training for the workforce and community, in particular those who may be community leaders and volunteers to recognise and respond to suicide. This training includes identifying those at risk of suicide, how to respond if they are feeling suicidal and referral options for those who may need professional support. It also fosters the growth of lived experience leaders in the community and develop relationships with leaders from at risk groups.

The focus over the coming period will continue to be on supporting the mental health and wellbeing of LifeConnect clients. Neami National are working closely with their existing clients to ensure a safe transition, maintaining support to people currently in the program and assisting new referrals to be connected with alternative bereavement supports, where needed and available.

The EMPHN SupportConnect team can assist with navigating people to the most appropriate support for their needs. More information can be found at www.supportconnect.org.au .
