My Emergency Dr is an app that facilitates a video consultation with an Australian-registered specialist emergency doctor within minutes when a person's usual GP isn't available after-hours.
Through EMPHN's funding, the service is free for residents living in Melbourne’s east and north east in the after-hours period, and is also available at cost to people Australia-wide.
The doctors are experts in making rapid, accurate assessments of all medical emergencies to assess a situation via the built-in video on your smartphone or tablet.
Since the implementation of the initiative in July 2018, patients have provided overwhelmingly positive feedback for the service with calls to the service growing at a rapid rate.
- 88.29% of all patients were managed in situ during January
- 61.22% of survey respondents said they would have gone to the emergency department or called 000 for an ambulance if they had not called My Emergency Dr
- Highest number of calls were from residents in Yarra Ranges and Whittlesea LGAs (target areas) who have limited access to after hours services, resulting in many residents attending hospital for after hours care.
See Graham's experience using the service in this short video.
During the after-hours period, people in EMPHN's catchment can access the service for free via phone or by using the My Emergency Dr app and quoting their postcode.
