Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (EMPHN) is funding free access to urgent after-hours medical care for people living in Melbourne’s east and north east, with help available over the phone or by video call via the My Emergency Dr app. Residents living in EMPHN’s catchment will have easy access to care from specialist emergency doctors for urgent after-hours needs when their GP isn’t available.
Federal Member for Latrobe Jason Wood MP said providing the right care in the right place at the right time is vital.
“Being able to provide people with access to accessible quality care, no matter the time of day, is highly important for the health of our community,” he said.
EMPHN CEO Robin Whyte said the service aims to avoid unnecessary presentations to emergency departments during the after-hours period.
“Being able to call or use the telehealth options in the app will mean some people avoid potential stress and time involved with travelling to a hospital emergency department when they don’t need to,” she said.
The app allows the user to not only speak with a specialist emergency doctor, but also to share video and pictures to assist in care giving.
Dr. Justin Bowra, CEO of My Emergency Dr said the service will really help those residents who can’t contact their normal GP or are unsure if they need to go to an Emergency Department at all.
All the doctors working for My Emergency Dr are Australian registered specialist emergency doctors. They are able to order diagnostic tests, write prescriptions, refer patients to other specialists or recommend patients attend an emergency department if needed. Every assessment is completed with a follow-up letter to their regular GP. GPs can proactively refer patients they are concerned about overnight.
Residents living in Melbourne’s east and north east can access free help via phone or by using the My Emergency Dr app by quoting their postcode during the after-hours period (outside 8am - 6pm on weekdays, outside 8am - 12 noon on Saturdays and all day on Sundays and public holidays). The My Emergency Dr app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
