General practice is the cornerstone of an individual’s healthcare team. The Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (EMPHN) catchment has 392 practices, of which 70% employ one or more nurses.
General practice nursing is unlike other areas of nursing practice. The online Orientation to General Practice for Practice Nurses program delivered by Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA), is the perfect way to build on your expertise and ensure you are well positioned to address the emerging healthcare challenges.
You may be new to general practice or want learn new skills to complement your daily practice.
Aim of the program
To enhance current capacity and support capability building within the primary care nursing workforce.
Mandatory program prerequisites
Registered with AHPRA
Working a minimum of 12 hours in a general practice in the EMPHN catchment
New or have transitioned to general practice in the last two years and/or solo position or limited opportunity to network with other experienced practice nurses
Basic computer skills for accessing the online training modules and webinars
Access to a current browser (e.g. most recent version of Chrome, Internet Explorer 10 and above, Firefox or Edge)
Program components
Online program to be completed by April 2020. Orientation topics include:
The Australian health care system and primary health care
Clinical assessment
Information management and digital health
Wound management
Immunisation
Quality and safety - accreditation, infection prevention and control,
Professional practice and professional development
Chronic disease management in primary healthcare
Communication in primary healthcare
Facilitating behaviour change
Health assessments
Understanding quality improvement in primary healthcare and the use of practice data
Additional evening webinar for 1.5 hours in May 2020 and August 2020. Topic to be determined by the needs of the participants. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.
Telephone support during business hours from a registered nurse throughout the 12 month program.
