Fracture Diversion Project Phase Two

Fracture Diversion Project Phase Two

23 January, 2019

Many patients presenting to hospital Emergency Departments (EDs) with simple fractures can be safely managed by general practitioners. EMPHN has been supporting GPs to accept referrals from hospital EDs to manage patients with simple fractures as part of the Fracture Diversion Project.

The project aimed to:

  • increase GPs knowledge and skills in fracture management

  • reduce patient’s waiting and travel time to hospital outpatient clinics

  • increase patient satisfaction with care.

Phase two is planned to commence in January 2019 and EMPHN is seeking expressions of interest for GPs to complete training in fracture management and accept referrals to manage patients with simple fractures.

This training attracts Category 1 RACGP-CPD points.

Hospitals participating in Phase 2:

Angliss Hospital

Box Hill Hospital

Maroondah Hospital

Northern Hospital

Project outcomes – Phase 1

  • 18 GPs trained in simple fracture management
  • 2500 patients diverted to trained GPs
  • 5 hospitals participated
